You can skip Grub, instead follow the directions to setup cobalt-rom from ​http://gentoo.404ster.com/texts.php?action=view&id=2

You will need an additional patch to add in the specifics for Cobalt x86 RaQ's ​http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/patches/downloads/linux/linux-2.6.17.1-cobalt_x86-2.patch

After the Kernel Installation, in the kernel source issues these command
cp vmlinux ${LFS}/boot/vmlinux
bzip2 ${LFS}/boot/vmlinux
