[3f8be484]12
[9988ef0]13 <para>Throughout this book, the environment variable <envar>CLFS</envar> will
[3f8be484]14 be used several times. It is paramount that this variable is always defined.
[b0dbcb6]15 It should be set to the mount point chosen for the CLFS partition.
[c07fa0e]16 For the purposes of this book, it is assumed that the file system
17 will be mounted under <filename class="directory">/mnt/clfs</filename>,
18 but the directory choice is up to you. Decide on a directory location and set
19 the variable with the following command:</para>

[3f8be484]22
23 <para>Having this variable set is beneficial in that commands such as
[040521bc]24 <command>install -dv ${CLFS}/tools</command> can be typed literally. The shell
25 will automatically replace <quote>${CLFS}</quote> with
[9988ef0]26 <quote>/mnt/clfs</quote> (or whatever the variable was set to) when it
[3f8be484]27 processes the command line.</para>
28
[040521bc]29 <para>Do not forget to check that <envar>${CLFS}</envar> is set whenever
[3f8be484]30 you leave and reenter the current working environment (as when doing a
31 <quote>su</quote> to <systemitem class="username">root</systemitem> or
[c07fa0e]32 another user). Check that the <envar>CLFS</envar> variable is set up
33 properly with:</para>

35<screen><userinput>echo ${CLFS}</userinput></screen>
36
37 <para>Make sure the output shows the path to the CLFS partition's mount
38 point, which is <filename class="directory">/mnt/clfs</filename> if the
39 provided example was followed. If the output is incorrect, use the command
40 given earlier on this page to set <envar>${CLFS}</envar> to the correct
41 directory name.</para>
